"Personal Branding for Women in Tech Who Hate Personal Branding” with Sarah Ing

Last week, I attended an insightful webinar led by Sarah Ing on personal branding, especially for those of us who aren’t naturally drawn to the idea of “selling ourselves.” It completely reframed how I think about personal branding, and I’m excited to share some of the top takeaways that stood out to me.

Top Takeaways from "Personal Branding for Women in Tech Who Hate Personal Branding" with Sarah Ing

  1. You Already Have a Personal Brand Personal branding is simply showing people what matters to you. Whether you’re aware of it or not, you’re already communicating your values and passions through your actions and interactions.
  2. Branding Happens Everywhere Branding isn't just about social media. It’s in every communication: emails, Slack messages, work presentations, and even in-person interactions. What you say, how you say it, and where you show up all contribute to your personal brand.
  3. Be Memorable Make an impression that sticks. This doesn't mean doing something extravagant—it’s about consistency and making sure people can easily recall you for the value you bring.
  4. You Don't Need to Be One Thing You don’t have to specialize in just one area. Sarah shared the example of a client who is a coach, plant-based chef, and educator. Her brand is multifaceted, showing the world that you can be more than one thing without confusion—it's about the story your brand tells.
  5. Authenticity Over 'Shoulds' Avoid the pressure of fitting into a mold. Personal branding works best when it’s rooted in who you really are, not who you think you should be. Embrace what makes you unique and share that with others.
  6. Make it Effortless Personal branding should feel natural. When you’re authentic and focused on what truly matters to you, it’ll be easier to promote your brand in an organic way.
  7. It Can Open Doors A strong personal brand can lead to job interviews, promotions, career pivots, side hustles, speaking opportunities, and valuable connections. The more visible you are, the more opportunities come your way.
