UX Engineer

Fly.io
Remote
Series C
101-250

Fly.io is building a new public cloud. We are a rapidly expanding mid-sized company that is primarily technical but we also have people ops, marketing and sales teams. We’re fully remote and hire folks all over the world. We’re building the product, the technology, and the company all at the same time - if you like making things and want your work to have a big impact, this is the place for you!

We’re building something ambitious at Fly.io: a new public cloud, running on our own hardware all over the world, built to make it easy to run apps close to users everywhere.

Don’t just skim this post. There are lots of different kinds of UX engineers, and we’re on the hunt for someone very specific.

For the past five years, we’ve been working on a public cloud platform that that has the ergonomics of “platform as a service” offerings like Heroku, but the power, flexibility, and economics of a hyperscaler cloud. Those goals are in tension, which makes working on UX here especially challenging.

This Role

A UX engineer at Fly.io is a primarily an Elixir developer. The work is primarily front-end and interaction design.

But Fly.io isn’t primarily written in Elixir, and every decision we make from button sizes to distributed consensus algorithms is driven by user needs. So you won’t just be thinking in Elixir: our CLI is a Go program, as is our API, and other components are in Rust and Ruby. You won’t own these components. But you’ll need to understand them, and to drive changes in them. It’s a daunting problem, so this is a senior role.

Fly.io has historically been a CLI-first company. The CLI isn’t going anywhere, but our emphasis is shifting. So, when we think about UX development, what’s in our head is: someone who makes sure our team is shipping, quickly, with a strong browser-based interface.

Finally, Fly.io is weird about product management, and that’s especially the case with UX. You will not have a PM to rely on for feature breakdowns or roadmaps. You’d need be prepared to come out of the gate with strong ideas about what’s going to make our users lives better, and what’s going to make them happy in the long run.

What We’re Doing Now

We’ve got two big product pushes happening in 2025.

The first is MPG, our upcoming Managed Postgres offering. Managed databases let users create databases and then not worry about them. Databases are complicated: lots of knobs, lots of flashing lights. We need the knobs simplified and the lights curated, so that MPG is telling the story users need to here, and not confusing them with other stuff.

The second use case is LLM execution environments. A crazy thing happens when you give a hallucination-prone LLM access to a secure, ephemeral environment with which to actually compile and run code: the LLM actually gets good at coding. We’ve got a handle on the core engine of generating code and getting it to run safely. But what is the UX of that as a product? What does it mean to start a new LLM-driven project, and what does it mean for it to be finished, put into production, maintained, and extended? We’re looking for somebody with takes.

Seriously, This Is A Fussy Role

We’re not afraid to talk you out of it. You’d need to be:

  • Attuned to the needs of the kinds of users that ship things on public clouds. Check out our public community if you think that’s easy to do consistently.
  • Relentlessly focused on shipping. We work with 2-week horizons here; 6 months from now might as well be the year 3000.
  • Rock solid with Elixir/Phoenix. Unafraid of Go.
  • Able to keep a model in your head of ambitious features that are implemented across many layers of software, many of which you don’t own; you have to be willing to get your brain dirty.

To us, all these things that make this job complicated also make it interesting. If we’ve held your attention this far, let’s see if we can make something work.

How We Hire

This is a senior, fully-remote, full-time position.

In order to optimize for pay equity, Fly.io doesn’t negotiate salaries. We have standardized salaries for each employee level. The salary for this role is $190 to $225k USD, depending on level. We offer competitive equity grants with a long exercise window. We provide health care benefits, flexible vacation time (with a minimum), hardware/phone allowances, the standard stuff.

Our hiring process may be a little different from what you’re used to. We respect career experience but we aren’t hypnotized by it, and we’re thrilled at the prospect of discovering new talent. So instead of resumes and interviews, we’re going to show you the kind of work we’re doing and then see if you enjoy actually doing it, with “work-sample challenges”. Unlike a lot of places that assign “take-home problems”, our challenges are the backbone of our whole process; they’re not pre-screeners for an interview gauntlet. (We’re happy to talk, though!)

There’s more about us than you probably want to know at our hiring documentation.

If you’re interested, mail jobs+ux@fly.io. You can tell us a bit about yourself, if you like. Please also include your location (country), and your Github username, for work sample access.

DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a teacher in need, moving us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.

Since 2000, more than 5 million people and partners have contributed $1 billion to support 2 million teacher requests for classroom resources and experiences. Projects range from art supplies to build the set for a school musical, to books and puzzles that affirm students' identities, to bird seed for an at-home science project. We proudly serve all US public schools, public charter schools, and Head Start centers, and we combat systemic inequity by driving a majority of donations to schools that have been historically underfunded due to economic and racial inequity.

DonorsChoose has been recognized as a best place to work by GOOD Magazine and the Nonprofit Times, while Fast Company named DonorsChoose one of the 50 Most Innovative Companies in the World—the first time a charity has made this list. Our dedicated team works from across the United States to bring classroom dreams to life.

About the Role

Imagine playing a key role in transforming public education by designing user experiences that empower teachers and donors. At DonorsChoose, we're seeking a highly motivated Product Designer who is a creative problem-solver and will own design challenges from end to end, driving solutions from initial concept to implementation. If you love applying deep UX thinking, visual design skills, and coding abilities to make a meaningful impact, and the desire to use data to measure impact and iterate for continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you.

Things you'll do:

  • Collaborate with user researchers, product managers, and engineers to identify and solve key user problems.
  • Design accessible, inclusive, and engaging experiences using user-centered design principles.
  • Create high-fidelity prototypes in Figma and work with our research team to test and validate ideas.
  • Communicate your design decisions effectively—gather feedback, build consensus, and get others excited about your ideas.
  • Contribute to the development process by writing clean, efficient front-end code (HTML, CSS, JS).
  • Use data and analytics to understand opportunities, measure success, refine designs, and drive continuous improvement.

You should have:

  • 4-5+ years of experience designing and shipping web products (both mobile and desktop).
  • A sharp product sense—you stay up to date with the latest in design, technology, and development, and you think critically about what makes digital experiences great.
  • Fluency in Figma, both in creating new designs and operating within a larger design system.
  • Strong front-end development skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and a willingness to dive into the codebase.
  • A knack for simplifying complex problems and crafting elegant, effective solutions.
  • Experience with A/B testing and data-driven optimization methods.
  • Strong communication skills—able to clearly present designs, articulate reasoning, and bring people along.
  • A passion for education, equity, and social impact.

About the Product, Engineering & Data Team

At DonorsChoose, our Product, Engineering & Data team operates like a fast-moving startup within a mission-driven nonprofit. We ship weekly, iterate quickly, and focus on impact. As a Product Designer, you'll work closely with product managers, UX researchers, and engineers to improve the experience for our donors and public school teachers—directly influencing educational outcomes for students across the U.S.

👉 Read more about How We Do Product and our Product Principles on our team's blog.

Compensation & Benefits

Our compensation philosophy ensures that we are both externally competitive with tech-forward nonprofits of a similar size and internally fair in our pay practices. The following ranges represent the target offer range given the scope and experience expectations for this role.

  • The hiring salary range for this role is $91,000 - $110,000
  • We have a hiring salary range of $103,000 - $122,500 for specific higher cost of labor locations, which include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Once employees are hired, everyone at DonorsChoose is eligible to receive annual performance-based raises as they grow in their role. We are open to a variety of experiences, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If you don't check every box listed here, or you know you'd bring additional experience to the table, we hope you'll submit your application.

In addition, we offer full-time staff 25 paid vacation days per year and 11 paid holidays, a rich employer-paid individual and family health plan, a matching 401(k) plan (up to 5% of base salary), annual professional development stipend, and casual and flexible work environment. Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with 283 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

This role is on the Experience Design (XD) Discovery + Foundations team. The team is responsible for designing the core member experience worldwide and creating personalized entertainment experiences that help members discover and connect with the content they love. When it comes to Discovery, the team prioritizes personalized content discovery, leverages human-centered AI, and ensures each member’s experience on Netflix reflects what they truly value based on their tastes and preferences.

The Foundations aspect focuses on defining the app architecture, critical member journeys, scalable platform patterns, and strategic framework and guidelines that help scale the product for a variety of use cases and content types. Our focus is on product excellence and platform innovation for TV, Mobile, and Web experiences.

This role supports the Member Experience product teams, which strive to make finding the right title on Netflix intuitive and compelling with relevant recommendations tailored to members’ needs.

This role can be hybrid but would be best for candidates located in California or in the Pacific time zone since in-person travel on a monthly basis may be required to collaborate with stakeholders. That said, we can always make exceptions in location for the right candidate.

About You

This role focuses on innovating at the heart of the Netflix product ecosystem across the member journey and helping to define experiences as our service expands to offer more types of content from Shows and Movies to Live and Games.

This is an opportunity to lead innovative product design with a demonstrable impact on a global scale. Using your full range of interaction, visual, and product-thinking skills, you’ll lead and own product features and create platform-level patterns. You balance a passion for creating highly functional and emotionally resonant experiences with a strong desire to understand user behavior and business success. You’re comfortable switching between vision-level, defining UX frameworks, and hands-on pixel-level work. You’ll partner with cross-functional teams who are charged with revolutionizing how entertainment is consumed and how storytelling is showcased by delivering engaging, inclusive experiences to members.

You’ll thoughtfully question the status quo and look closely at how we can push the user experience further with emerging technologies. You thrive in uncharted territories where design hasn’t historically found itself or where the rules and engagements aren’t already established. How do the user experience, underlying logic, recommendation systems, and tooling all fit together? You’ll define strategies and design solutions that will bring this vision to life, then work with cross-functional partners to execute against it.

What You’ll Do

  • Identify and define platform experiences and features and create elegantly simple solutions to complex problems.
  • Drive a human-centered design process for defining and executing features from concept to launch.
  • Clearly communicate design rationale and iterations to partners and stakeholders.
  • Articulate a vision and contribute to strategic decisions around the future direction of what it means to design personalized member experiences from onboarding to browse, search, playback and beyond in an expanding ecosystem of content types.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team spanning consumer research, data science, product management, merchandising and engineering to test, iterate and launch features that advance our mission to connect members with the best Series, Films, Live and Games.
  • Provide systems thinking for large-scale modular design systems, both strategically and tactically.
  • Lead a product domain with multiple initiatives, involving working across domains and/or on areas of sustained investments and roadmaps.
  • Navigate the stakeholder landscape, working both horizontally and vertically to influence and shape company strategy and objectives.
  • Identify business needs through domain expertise and business context; shape their work to account for complexities and uncertainties.
  • Maintain a keen understanding of what motivates users and evangelize that knowledge across their team and domain.
  • Employ storytelling to present a vision to create a shared understanding of the UX strategy with the broader team. Apply big-picture thinking to break down ambiguous opportunities into an actionable roadmap.
  • Champion our members and a global-first mindset.
  • Give and solicit feedback in order to continually raise the bar for quality and craft.
  • Embrace our culture of experimentation and A/B testing and zero-to-one innovation

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience designing user experiences for consumer-facing products across mobile, web and/or TV. Discovery or search-related experiences are a plus.
  • Experience designing and shipping personalized consumer products.
  • Excel in interaction design, visual design, and prototyping skills for defining how an experience should function and look based on understanding people's needs.
  • Ability to think at a high level about product strategy and articulate a vision.
  • Track record of designing and shipping products and leading projects to successful outcomes for global users and the business.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, and drive clarity that brings the user, technology, and business together. Experience working in a complex, cross-functional organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate the rationale behind your design decisions. Experience presenting work to a broader product team and leaders, clearly and succinctly articulating goals and concepts.
  • Experience connecting the dots across the organization with other related initiatives across the company while driving collaboration.
  • An insatiable curiosity for user experiences powered by AI, machine learning, algorithms, and recommendation systems.

~~~
𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆: Crossover jobs are are fully compliant with LinkedIn's policies, as well as the applicable laws in every country where we advertise.
Allow us to clarify some common misconceptions:
  1. The reason we post so many job ads is because LinkedIn organizes all job postings by location. So, the only way to reach candidates all over the world is to post multiple ads in every city you want to hire from. Most recruiters don't bother because it's too time consuming... but we're not most recruiters.
  2. We mostly recruit independent contractors, not employees, because labor laws vary so much from one country to another that it's near-impossible to recruit globally otherwise (which is why it's still uncommon even though most jobs can now be done remotely).
  3. As is standard for any self-employed person, the stated pay is the entire compensation package. Because they are not employees, each contractor is responsible for handling the things that an employer would take care of e.g. taxes, equipment, vacation time, health insurance. One of the major reasons that Crossover jobs pay so much more than local jobs is to overcompensate for these costs.
It's hard, but it's worth it!
Hi, I'm Shannon, a Customer Success Team Manager at Customer.io. We're looking for Associate Customer Success Managers to join our growing team.
As an Associate Customer Success Manager at Customer.io, you’ll specialize in our SMB and Mid-Market segment to manage the successful onboarding of accounts, and ongoing support for customers on our pooled Customer Success model.
You’ll lead with empathy and problem-solving to guide assigned customers through key elements of onboarding, enabling them to achieve their desired business outcomes. Tasked with getting general or strategic questions answered for customers, you’ll collaborate with customer success enablement, technical support, sales, product, and engineering (when appropriate) to unlock value from the Customer.io platform in the first 90 days. You’ll help manage customers’ long-term success beyond onboarding with pooled Customer Success entailing a shared inbox and ad-hoc Zoom calls where appropriate.
We don’t need you to be a marketing expert - but rather, an expert at getting questions answered and influencing the customer to make progress and move through blockers. You won't necessarily be a data or technical expert but will be keen to get a good understanding of our app so that you can take a use case and leverage our features to make your customer successful.
This is an essential role within our greater Customer Experience team that presents exciting opportunities to iterate on process and develop a program that directly impacts long-term objectives to scale the business with Customer Success. In this position, you’ll learn the ins and outs of the lifecycle functions of our customers and will be eligible for growth and development opportunities into other CSM roles.
Some things you'll do
  • Kick-off calls with key stakeholders to outline the general onboarding plan and timetable
  • Planning and organization of the data customers will send to their Customer.io account, and how they’ll use it to power effective campaigns and newsletters
  • Conversations with customers to unearth reasons why messaging matters to them and help them plan, implement, and follow through with their messaging goals
  • Ensuring confidence in the Go-Live process by advising on testing strategies and steering clear of possible pitfalls as customers begin sending messages to their audiences
  • Being your customer’s first point of contact to provide them with dedicated support and initial troubleshooting. We don’t expect you to know all of the answers, but you will gather information and receive help from TS, Product, and Engineering to solve problems
  • Advising on best practices and practical knowledge as customers adopt new features and use cases throughout their life cycle
  • Identify gaps in process and resources to optimize the customer experience in this segment and collaborate with teammates to implement solutions
  • Helping manage our shared inbox for customer requests and questions
About you
  • You’re curious and enjoy learning about different businesses and industries
  • You’ve got a thirst for knowledge, and are keen to understand our app
  • We often find ourselves in situations like this: A customer completed their integration with Customer.io. They want to create a complex, time-sensitive campaign but their engineers are unavailable to help the marketer interpret their data for setting up this campaign. How do you help them?
  • Creative problem solver who can understand the customer's problem and find the best solution regardless of what the customer is asking for
  • You’re calm under stress and not easily rattled
  • You enjoy solving problems independently but aren’t afraid to ask for help or collaboration when you need to
  • You’re excited at the prospect of joining a quickly growing and evolving team and having an impact on the development of our Customer Success program
What we're looking for
  • 1+ years of experience in roles that require technical expertise, customer interaction, and problem-solving skills.
  • You’re excited about collaborating with SMB customers and tailoring the Customer Success experience to fit their needs
  • You’ve worked in a company doing customer success or another customer-facing role (bonus points if you have a background in SaaS!)
  • You get fulfillment from jumping into new scenarios and using your expertise to find solutions
  • You have experience communicating with software developers in a technical capacity
  • You’re opinionated about customer experience for a business and in general. To give strategic advice to customers, you should have well-formed opinions!
  • Bonus points: You’ve been responsible for designing lifecycle messages
  • Bonus points: You are fluent in French, Russian, and/or Spanish
This is an essential role within our greater Customer Experience team that presents exciting opportunities to iterate on process and develop a program that directly impacts long-term objectives to scale the business with Customer Success. In this position, you’ll learn the ins and outs of the lifecycle functions of our customers and will be eligible for growth and development opportunities into other CSM roles.
Some things you'll do
  • Kick-off calls with key stakeholders to outline the general onboarding plan and timetable
  • Planning and organization of the data customers will send to their Customer.io account, and how they’ll use it to power effective campaigns and newsletters
  • Conversations with customers to unearth reasons why messaging matters to them and help them plan, implement, and follow through with their messaging goals
  • Ensuring confidence in the Go-Live process by advising on testing strategies and steering clear of possible pitfalls as customers begin sending messages to their audiences
  • Being your customer’s first point of contact to provide them with dedicated support and initial troubleshooting. We don’t expect you to know all of the answers, but you will gather information and receive help from TS, Product, and Engineering to solve problems
  • Advising on best practices and practical knowledge as customers adopt new features and use cases throughout their life cycle
  • Identify gaps in process and resources to optimize the customer experience in this segment and collaborate with teammates to implement solutions
  • Helping manage our shared inbox for customer requests and questions
About you
  • You’re curious and enjoy learning about different businesses and industries
  • You’ve got a thirst for knowledge, and are keen to understand our app
  • We often find ourselves in situations like this: A customer completed their integration with Customer.io. They want to create a complex, time-sensitive campaign but their engineers are unavailable to help the marketer interpret their data for setting up this campaign. How do you help them?
  • Creative problem solver who can understand the customer's problem and find the best solution regardless of what the customer is asking for
  • You’re calm under stress and not easily rattled
  • You enjoy solving problems independently but aren’t afraid to ask for help or collaboration when you need to
  • You’re excited at the prospect of joining a quickly growing and evolving team and having an impact on the development of our Customer Success program
What we're looking for
  • 1+ years of experience in roles that require technical expertise, customer interaction, and problem-solving skills.
  • You’re excited about collaborating with SMB customers and tailoring the Customer Success experience to fit their needs
  • You’ve worked in a company doing customer success or another customer-facing role (bonus points if you have a background in SaaS!)
  • You get fulfillment from jumping into new scenarios and using your expertise to find solutions
  • You have experience communicating with software developers in a technical capacity
  • You’re opinionated about customer experience for a business and in general. To give strategic advice to customers, you should have well-formed opinions!
  • Bonus points: You’ve been responsible for designing lifecycle messages
  • Bonus points: You are fluent in French, Russian, and/or Spanish
Hi, I’m Paul, VP Engineering at Customer.io.
I'm looking for someone to manage the engineering squad working on our Data Pipelines product. Launched in mid-2023, Data Pipelines is a new and growing product that allows customers to connect and activate their data from multiple sources. You’ll get to move fast and own broad scope in building something new, while having the support and resources of a 250-person company. You’ll lead a team solving challenging problems in building scalable, distributed systems while creating an intuitive user experience.
At Customer.io, we are tired of the fact that most messages people receive are dull, mistimed, repetitive, and overbearing. We aim to fix that. The first product we introduced is Journeys: the industry’s most flexible automation platform for customer communication (email, mobile push, SMS, and more). Our second product is Data Pipelines: a Customer Data Platform (CDP) that empowers marketers at companies big and small to bring accurate, real-time data to all customer touch points.
Help us make an impact on the high-growth CDP market like we already have in the marketing automation market!
As an Engineering Manager at Customer.io, you will...
  • Lead effective squad rituals, and ensure production readiness through quality peer-review, quality standards, documentation, deployment, logging, and monitoring practices
  • Ensure your squad’s solutions are scalable, architecturally sound, flexible, and secure
  • Create accountability for delivery timelines while fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and empathetic work environment
  • Provide direct, timely, and specific coaching and development opportunities for your direct reports across backend, front-end, full stack, and QA
  • Hire, onboard and manage performance to ensure the right people are in place to accomplish business objectives within your squad
  • Understand Customer.io’s vision, business model, target markets, acquisition channels, competitors, and products well enough to ask questions that drive meaningful investigation within your squad
  • Build and maintain a partnership with your Product Management and Design peers
We're looking for someone who…
  • Works in North/South American time zones
  • Has at least three years’ experience as an Engineering Manager working on a SaaS product (B2B or B2C) at an (ideally early-to-mid-stage) SaaS company
  • Understands SaaS software architecture, languages (we use Go), technologies, and cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS) deeply enough to represent their squad’s technical choices across the company
  • Makes time to understand technical architecture, tinker with new technologies, review proposals, and provide feedback to level up the engineers around them
  • Builds and nurtures high performing teams
  • Is fueled to reach higher when our customers are having a bad day
  • Communicates concisely, accurately, and directly, both verbally and in writing
